Start at doors and windows
Operate commonly used exterior doors and windows. Look for worn weather-stripping, damaged storm components, obvious gaps and latches that do not align.
Walk the exterior safely
From ground level, note loose-looking trim, open sealant joints, damaged surfaces and water staining. Roof concerns should go to an appropriately licensed roofing contractor.
Prepare access
Think about where snow will accumulate, where service people need to walk and which doors must remain usable. Move seasonal clutter before it freezes in place.
Make an indoor winter list
Winter is a good time for assembly, cabinet or door adjustments, hardware lists and interior organization.
Separate trade work early
Electrical issues, plumbing leaks, heating-system problems, structural movement and roofing damage should be routed to the appropriate licensed trade.
